The Nutcracker-teased Christmas Story

I was really looking forward to watching The Nutcracker this year. Mountain View has a cute little Performing Arts Theatre and last month I read in the local newspaper that they were going to perform this beloved Christmas classic. I haven’t seen this play since I was a little girl and I was enamored with the thought of seeing it again, while supporting the local arts of the town where I live. However, when I went to the theatre’s website to buy tickets I was disappointed to find out that the Nutcracker was only going to be preformed for ONE weekend this December. I couldn’t believe it; just one weekend out of the whole year? What were they thinking? Why go to the trouble of making the performance at all? Unfortunately the only weekend showing was a weekend occupied by my school activities. Consequently, for me, this year will remain Nutcracker-less and I feel Nutcracker-teased by Mountain View, Ca.

I was in a local performance of the Nutcracker in high school and we only did one weekend -- I think we might have only done one performance. In small-ish towns like this, the musicians are usually volunteers, the professional dancers are brought in from another town, and the other dancers are just local kids. Pretty much no one is doing this for pay and most of the ticket sales go toward the venues or the few professional people brought in from of out town. since the local volunteer people aren't getting paid you pretty much can't make them do more than 1 or 2 performances. it's similar to local theater, or local orchestra performances ... these people have real jobs and aren't getting paid to do this, so no one can really do more than one or two shows. I believe this is pretty common; it's only in big cities where the pros can put it on multiple times!

anyway that's my answer.

regardless, I hope you get a chance to see it somewhere. Maybe you can go into the City? I love the Nutcracker :)
